Attorney Thomas Torr is a founding partner of Cocheco Elder Law Associates, PLLC, and a native of the New Hampshire seacoast area. His practice is dedicated to helping his clients enhance and preserve their wealth, protect their loved ones and legacies, and manage their affairs during times of crisis. Tom’s priority is building strong, long-lasting relationships with his clients to help them achieve their personal, professional and estate goals.
Tom’s commitment to helping people and making a difference in the world began at an early age. Initially, he tried to accomplish this through politics. While attending the University of New Hampshire, Tom interned for Senator Warren B. Rudman of New Hampshire. After earning his BA, Tom worked for the Republican National Committee during the early 1980s, doing presidential opposition research. He was also the Finance Chair of the Brady For Congress campaign in 1984. After that, Tom spent several years in the Office of Congressional and Public Affairs at the U.S. Customs Service and the Department of Treasury.
While Tom has plenty of interesting stories about these years, over time he came to the conclusion that he was not making much of a direct impact on peoples’ lives. He decided to become an estate planning attorney, enrolled at Ohio Northern University, and earned his J.D. in 1993. His unique approach to the practice of law allows Tom to help his clients enjoy the peace of mind that comes from having a plan in place for the future.
Tom is a member of both the New Hampshire and Maine Bars. He is admitted to practice before all courts, state and federal, in both New Hampshire and Maine. Tom’s practice includes elder law, Veterans and Medicaid planning, estate and wealth transfer planning, incapacity protection, asset protection planning, estate and trust administration, disability planning, special needs trusts, retirement asset planning, business law, and real estate.
Tom is a frequent lecturer on basic and sophisticated estate planning topics. He has authored articles on a variety of topics related to business law, sophisticated asset protection, estate planning and probate administration.
Tom is often asked to be a guest speaker at community and professional seminars dealing with estate planning topics ranging from guardianships to complex estate planning and post-mortem planning. He is the host of Legally Speaking with Tom Torr on News Talk 98.1 WTSN every Saturday morning at 9:00 a.m.
Tom is a member of the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys and the New Hampshire Estate Planning Council. He serves on the Board of Directors of the Wentworth Douglass Hospital Foundation as well as the Executive (Secretary), Advancement and By-Laws Committees of the Foundation.
